Derwen College
Derwen College is one of the leading specialist colleges in the country, providing residential placements for young adults with learning difficulties.
As part of the vocational training our students have the opportunity of working in the many attractions that are open to the public. It is for this reason that visitors are always welcome at the Derwen.
Our students can serve you at Betty’s Coffee Shop or the Orangery Restaurant after you've visited our newly opened Young's Farm Shop, the Garden Centre, The Gallery or Derwen Estates. So therefore why not visit the Derwen College and take the opportunity to relax and enjoy the wide range of college amenities.

Betty’s Coffee Shop offers visitors to Derwen College a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where you can unwind after visiting our garden centre or walking around our beautiful campus. As well as a variety of drinks which include soft drinks, teas, coffees and hot chocolate, we also offer a light home made snack menu which changes every day. Competitively priced dishes include homemade soups, meat dishes, vegetarian options and of course puddings. The Orangery is open to members of the public, staff and trainees. The menu in the morning is a snack menu. It offers an Orangery grill and sandwich selection. Hot and cold drinks are available including teas, coffees and soft drinks. There is an extensive selection of full meals available from lunchtime onwards. We have vegetarian options, a healthy option and there is also a self service salad bar. We provide table service, disabled access and allow guide dogs. Young's Farm Shop is a fitting memorial to the late Barbara Young of Horton House Farm, near Wem, whose generous legacy has contributed towards this retail development. The recently opened Young’s Farm Shop specialises in sourcing locally produced products. Here you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables (and organic where available from our own market garden) along with a variety of quality dairy, bakery, butchery and other grocery products, all under one roof. A high percentage of the stock has even been sourced from within a 20 mile radius of the college. This will be shown on the specially designed labels which appear on each product showing the food miles travelled to arrive at Derwen College. In the Garden Centre our ever expanding horticultural section offers all your gardening requirements from plants to seeds. We also have an excellent range of gifts, garden furniture, plants, pots and flowers. Our experienced staff are on hand to give advice and direction should you have any gardening concerns. There is also a separate 'walled garden' where a variety of specialist vegetables, salads and herbs are grown, some of historical interest. We supply plants and gardening products of the broadest range and of excellent quality, and give expert guidance and customer advice. Visitors to The Gallery can enjoy an exciting and colourful rage of 2D and 3D artworks produced by students at Derwen College. The artworks are frequently replenished in line with updated themes. The students use a variety of mediums and techniques such as ceramics, glass work, painting, drawing, collage, textiles, multimedia and photography. Visitors to Derwen Estates can wonder around a ten acre site, split into a woodland area with a 750 metre footpath and approximately 3000 young trees. |
